Your baby is drooling non-stop, chewing everything in sight and waking up crying at 2 a.m. — is it teething? As a pediatric dentist in Bharuch, this is the question I answer most from new parents. Here is exactly what baby teething symptoms look like, what is not teething, and which remedies are safe in India in 2026.

When do babies start teething?

Most babies get their first tooth between 6 and 10 months, usually the two lower front teeth (central incisors). Some start as early as 4 months, others as late as 13 months — both are normal. By age 3, your child should have all 20 milk teeth. If no tooth has appeared by 15 months, book a pediatric dental check-up.

Baby teething symptoms: the real list

  • Excess drooling — often the first sign, 1–2 months before the tooth shows
  • Swollen, red, tender gums over the erupting tooth
  • Biting and chewing on fingers, toys, the edge of the cot
  • Irritability and fussiness, especially in the evening
  • Disturbed sleep and shorter naps
  • Reduced appetite for solids, more clinginess to the bottle or breast
  • Mild rash on the chin and neck from constant drool
  • Ear rubbing or cheek pulling on the side of the erupting tooth

What teething does NOT cause

This is where most parents in India get misled. Research is very clear — teething does not cause:

  • High fever (above 38°C / 100.4°F)
  • Severe diarrhoea or vomiting
  • Cough, cold or a runny nose with fever
  • Body rash away from the drool area
  • Refusal of all fluids or extreme lethargy

Teething can raise body temperature by a few decimal points at most. If your baby has real fever, loose motions or is not drinking, that is an illness — see your paediatrician, not the teething gel.

Safe teething remedies (dentist-approved)

  1. Chilled (not frozen) teething ring — 20–30 minutes in the fridge, never the freezer. Frozen rings can bruise delicate gums.
  2. Clean finger gum massage — firm, gentle pressure for 1–2 minutes is the fastest natural relief.
  3. Cold, damp muslin cloth to chew — cheap and very effective.
  4. Chilled cucumber or carrot stick (only for babies already eating solids, and always supervised).
  5. Wipe the drool often and apply a plain barrier cream to prevent a chin rash.
  6. Paracetamol drops in the paediatrician-prescribed dose if your baby is genuinely in pain at night.

Teething remedies to avoid

  • Benzocaine / lidocaine teething gels — not recommended under 2 years
  • Amber teething necklaces — a choking and strangulation risk with no proven benefit
  • Homeopathic teething tablets of unknown composition
  • Rusks, biscuits or sweet teething cakes — the #1 cause of early bottle-and-biscuit decay we treat in Bharuch
  • Honey or gud rubbed on gums — sugar on new teeth, and unsafe under 12 months

How to clean teething gums and the first tooth

Start cleaning before the first tooth. Wipe the gum pads with a clean damp cloth after the last night feed. The moment the first tooth appears, switch to a soft infant brush with a rice-grain smear of 1000 ppm fluoride toothpaste, twice a day. See our guide on the best toothpaste for kids in India for age-wise quantities.

When to see a pediatric dentist

  • No tooth by 15 months
  • A tooth that comes in brown, grey or with white patches
  • Bleeding, pus or a swollen bump on the gum
  • A natal tooth (present at birth) — this needs assessment for loose-tooth choking risk
  • Any fall or knock during the crawling stage that hits the front teeth

Your child's first dental visit should happen by their first birthday — read when should my child first visit a dentist. At Little Angels Kids Dental Care in Bharuch, the first infant visit is a gentle knee-to-knee exam that takes under 10 minutes.
