Tooth Pain Relief at Home: What Works, What Does Not, and When to See a Dentist

Cartoon tooth character holding an ice pack with warm salt water beside it — tooth pain relief at home, Little Angels Kids Dental Care Bharuch

Quick answer: Rinse with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 15 minutes, keep your head raised, and take the paracetamol or ibuprofen dose that is normally safe for you. Home remedies only buy time — a tooth that hurts on its own, throbs at night, or comes with facial swelling needs a dentist within 24–48 hours.

Toothache is the single most common reason people search for a dentist at 2 a.m. In our Bharuch clinic, most of those patients had already tried clove oil, painkillers and warm compresses for two or three days before calling. That delay is what turns a small filling into a root canal. This guide gives you the remedies that are genuinely supported by evidence, the ones that damage teeth, and the exact point at which you should stop self-treating.

9 home remedies ranked by how well they actually work

  1. Warm salt-water rinse (works). Half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, swish for 30 seconds, 3–4 times a day. Reduces bacterial load and eases gum inflammation.
  2. Cold compress on the cheek (works). 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. Constricts blood vessels and numbs the area — the most reliable non-drug relief for swelling.
  3. Correct-dose painkiller (works best). For most healthy adults, paracetamol 500 mg or ibuprofen 400 mg with food gives more relief than any herbal remedy. Follow the dose on the pack and never exceed it. Ask your doctor first if you are pregnant, asthmatic, have ulcers, kidney or liver problems, or take blood thinners.
  4. Sleep with your head raised (works). Two pillows. Lying flat increases blood pressure in the pulp, which is exactly why toothache is worse at night.
  5. Clove oil, used correctly (partly works). Eugenol is a mild natural anaesthetic. One drop on a cotton pellet placed on the tooth — never poured on the gum, which causes chemical burns.
  6. Avoid the trigger (works). Chew on the other side, skip very hot, cold, sweet and hard foods until you are seen.
  7. Hydrogen-peroxide rinse, diluted (limited). 3% peroxide mixed 1:1 with water, for adults only, never swallowed, never for children.
  8. Garlic paste (limited). Some antibacterial effect, strong burning risk on the gum. Not recommended for children.
  9. Aspirin placed on the tooth (harmful — do not do this). It burns the gum and does nothing for the tooth. Aspirin works when swallowed, not when placed.

Children's toothache: what is different

Never give aspirin to a child. Use only paediatric paracetamol or ibuprofen at the weight-based dose printed on the bottle, and avoid clove oil under 2 years. A child who cries with tooth pain at night almost always has a cavity that has reached the nerve, and it will not resolve on its own — read our full guide to child tooth pain at night. If your child is scared of the dentist, laughing gas sedation lets us treat the tooth calmly in a single visit.

Red flags — go to a dentist immediately

  • Swelling of the face, jaw, or under the eye
  • Difficulty swallowing, opening the mouth, or breathing — this is a hospital emergency
  • Fever with dental pain
  • Pain that has needed painkillers for more than 2–3 days
  • A knocked-out or broken tooth after an accident
  • Bad taste or pus discharge near a tooth

Antibiotics bought over the counter do not cure a dying nerve. They may quieten the pain for a week while the infection spreads — one of the most common reasons a savable tooth ends up extracted. See our emergency dentist in Bharuch page for same-day help.

Frequently asked questions

How can I stop tooth pain fast at home?

Rinse with warm salt water, hold a cold compress against the cheek for 15 minutes, keep your head raised and take your usual safe dose of paracetamol or ibuprofen. This controls pain for a few hours but does not treat the cause.

Why is tooth pain worse at night?

Lying flat raises blood pressure inside the tooth's pulp chamber, and there are fewer distractions. Sleeping propped up on two pillows measurably reduces night-time throbbing.

Does clove oil really help toothache?

Yes, mildly. Eugenol in clove oil is a natural anaesthetic. Put one drop on a cotton pellet against the tooth — never pour it onto the gum, which causes chemical burns.

Is salt water good for a toothache?

Yes. A warm rinse of half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water 3-4 times a day reduces bacteria and gum swelling, and helps flush food from a cavity.

Can I put an aspirin tablet on my tooth?

No. Placing aspirin on the gum burns the tissue and gives no pain relief. Painkillers only work when swallowed.

When is toothache an emergency?

Facial swelling, fever, pus, difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth, or pain after a dental injury all need same-day care. Difficulty breathing or swallowing is a hospital emergency.

Will antibiotics cure my toothache?

No. Antibiotics can reduce swelling temporarily, but a decayed or infected tooth needs a filling, root canal or extraction. Taking antibiotics alone often delays treatment and makes it worse.

What painkiller is best for tooth pain?

For most healthy adults, ibuprofen works better than paracetamol for dental pain because the pain is inflammatory. Follow the dose on the pack and check with your doctor if you are pregnant or have stomach, kidney or asthma problems.

How do I relieve my child's tooth pain at night?

Give the weight-based paediatric dose of paracetamol or ibuprofen, use a cold compress, raise the head of the bed and keep them off sweet or cold foods. Never use aspirin in children. Book a dental visit the next day.
